Learning to learn competence

Key to learning – for preschool children we offer a licensed programme which concentrates on developing the skill of self-learning. The programme is based on Lev Vygotsky’s approach, ‘Play is the closest environment for a child’s development. It is during play time that a child always behaves beyond their age, beyond their everyday behaviour, they are creative. One can say that in play it is as though they were a head taller than themselves. The connection between playing and development should be compared to the connection between learning and development.

Key to Learning Programme is in accordance with the core curriculum of the Ministry of Education with some elements extending beyond it.

Cloud – helps children resolve conflicts successfully for both sides through a thorough analysis of the needs of both parties involved in it.

Kompetencje Językowe

We conduct English lessons on an everyday basis. The teacher stays with us for a few hours and communicates exclusively in English. Our teachers take part in eTwinning projects, which lead to international collaboration with preschools from around the world.

Ms Iga is responsible for French classes in our preschool. Two fun puppets, Jaroslav and Mini, have been helping her in this process for many years now.

‘The workout for your mouth and tongue’ i.e. speech therapy is a weekly, preventive meeting with a speech therapist, Ms Monika, who observes, recognises problems and, if necessary, conducts individual therapy in our preschool.

Mathematical competence and competence in science, technology and engineering

Mathematics with E. Gruszczyk-Kolczyńska method develops logical thinking and helps form mathematical concepts. During our lessons we count, estimate, measure and check. Children use mathematical thinking and basic mathematical knowledge in solving everyday problems.

Chess – this royal game is known and liked by our preschoolers. It develops logical thinking, fosters concentration and teaches analytical and creative thinking.

Research projects – we enter the world of science and technology step by step learning about basic connections. We examine, experience, check and often make mistakes. But it is those mistakes that eventually lead us to logical conclusions.

Competence in science

Research projects method develops interest in the world of nature. We become the researchers of reality.

Experimenting brings us closer to the world of flora and fauna. For young children this competence includes hands-on activities.

Observation is one of the most important methods of work. We observe the world around us and we try to understand it. It is thanks to observation and cause-and-effect thinking that we understand that we need to take care of the world together in order to leave it in a good condition for the future generations.

Digital competence

Encryption – encryption and decryption of messages is the introduction to programming. Children get familiarised with this challenging task in a form of play with the use of appropriate didactic tools. Children are really fond of these lessons.

Interactive whiteboards and iPads are available to our children and they support the development of digital competences. We use them in a well-thought out and planned manner. They are the main source of information for us and give us the possibility of creative activity in virtual reality.

Lego Education – in our preschool Lego building blocks are used to teach maths and encryption. We often use them in developing social competences. They are used to teach, explore and have fun.

Personal and social competences

We organise seasonal events as well as important celebrations such as Grandmother’s and Grandfather’s Days, Family Picnic, Induction to the Community of Preschoolers and birthdays.

Professional staff – in our preschool there is a psychologist, a speech therapist and a coach who can help children that need it. We provide equal opportunities to children with different psychological needs.

Mindfulness – we help children in coping with stress and relieving tension through everyday relaxation and breathing exercises. We conduct mindfulness training once a week with a qualified coach. Some elements of mindfulness are also used by teachers during group work on an everyday basis.

Cultural awareness and expression competence

Visiting cultural centres – we often visit Miniatura City Theatre in Gdańsk, Musical Theatre in Gdynia, the Opera for concerts dedicated to children and various museums and exhibitions.

Art classes - are our main form of artistic expression. We look for inspiration in nature around us as well as well-known artists’ work. The art corner is one of the most popular places in our classroom.

Rhythm classes – dance and music lessons are an indispensable part of our everyday schedule. You can hear music in our preschool every day. We learn about different kinds of music, e.g.: classical or contemporary jazz. We often play together using instruments from our well-equipped music corner.

Drama classes help develop our imagination and sensitivity and are a permanent element of our education. Children eagerly turn into tiny artists and act out various scenes.

Entrepreneurship

Children become aware of their possibilities through the development of thinking, observation, creativity and learning to create innovative and practical objects. They learn that those possibilities are endless. Each idea is good, you only need perseverance and willingness to develop it.

We do not pay attention to mistakes as we believe they are a natural element of creating. Thanks to TOC, children can plan and conduct many activities on their own.
